What People Get Wrong About the System

A lot of people think they understand the system.

They think it’s just about being placed somewhere safe, having rules, and being taken care of.

But it’s more complicated than that.

What people don’t always see is what it does to you mentally and emotionally.

It’s not just about where you live—it’s about constantly having to adjust. Constantly having to figure things out on your own.

People don’t talk enough about the feeling of not fully belonging anywhere.

Or how hard it is to trust people when your environment keeps changing.

Or how you learn to keep things to yourself because explaining your situation feels exhausting.

There’s also this idea that once you leave the system, everything just gets better.

But healing doesn’t work like that.

Some things stay with you.

The way you think.
The way you react.
The way you protect yourself.

And unlearning those things takes time.

This isn’t to say there weren’t any good moments.

But it’s important to be honest about the full experience—not just the parts that are easier to understand.

Because the truth is, growing up in the system shapes you in ways that don’t just disappear.

And the more we talk about it, the more people can actually understand what it’s really like.
